Subaru Driver Travis Pastrana Wins 2017 Oregon Trail Rally

 

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana held off teammate David Higgins to win the #2017OregonTrailRally near Portland, Oregon. Pastrana and his co-driver Robbie Durant lead from the first stage in their #199 2017 Subaru WRX STI. Stocker Subaru in State College, PA congratulates the Subaru Rally Team USA on their win. 

This Rally was round 2 of the 2017 American Rally Association Championship. It is regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging events on the calendar. The Rally starts on mixed surface stages at Portland International Raceway and then moves to the scenic Columbia Gorge for the gravel rally stages. Teams contended with multiple tarmac stages as well, adding to the challenge.

This year’s result was as intense and as closely fought as last year’s Oregon Trail Rally, where Higgins and Pastrana traded stage times throughout the event with Higgins earning victory by just 9.5 seconds. However, this year Pastrana led from start and held off Higgins’ constant attacks to win by just 10.5 seconds. Both Pastrana and Higgins are on the Subaru Rally Team USA.

The key to Pastrana’s success may have been a tire choice gamble early in the event. During the mixed tarmac and dirt stages at the Portland International Raceway, Pastrana chose tarmac tires whereas Higgins opted for gravel tires. He was able to maintain his lead throughout the race. This highlights the importance of a good set of tires.
