State Theatre Has Something For Everyone

 

The State Theatre is a community-owned non-profit organization serving the Centre County region. The theatre is a mainstay of the State College community and a proud center of local culture, featuring local artists both homegrown and nationally renowned. Our Stocker Subaru staff loves going to events at the State Theatre. 

There’s something for everyone at The State Theatre, from high drama to children’s musicals, from rock ’n’ roll to live broadcasts of the Met. Rarely a day goes by without a show to be seen, a concert to be heard or a laugh to be had.

Flicks for 35 cents! In 1938 Warner Brothers opened The #StateTheatre as a test market for new films. The state-of-the-art cinema was built in just four months for whopping $70,000 (approximately $1,190,993 in today's dollars) Moviegoers could see four different flicks each week. General admission was 30 cents for matinees, 35 cents after 5pm, and children’s tickets cost just 15 pennies.

Eventually the theatre lost its glamour and its doors closed in 2001. By 1999, some community members had the dream of turning the old theatre into an arts performance center, owned and operated by the community. It would provide a home stage to local groups and citizens would be able to enjoy a variety of music and theatre in an intimate setting. The State Theatre had the potential to revitalize the downtown, expose a range of people to artists both national and international, and bring additional income into the community.

Money for renovation was raised and the lush glory of The State’s former life was renewed, and State College regained its historic gem and cultural center of the community.
