Mount Nittany is often the first hike many people take in Centre County, PA. It’s also the most-hiked mountain in Centre County. Our #StockerSubaru dealership highly recommends putting this moderate climb on your to-do list. It’s a great hike any time of year with its great views of Happy Valley and the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a great car to drive to the trailhead, come see our extensive inventory at our State College dealership.
History
The 'Nittany' in Mount Nittany is said to come from an Indian words meaning protective barrier against the elements. Local folklore tells the legend of an Indian princess, Princess Nita-Nee who led her tribe to the safe haven of Nittany Valley. When she died, it is said that a mountain arose from her burial site.
Trails
The most frequently hiked trails on Mount Nittany are those at its southern end. Another recommended trail on the northern end is the James Cleveland Trail. This ascends Mount Nittany between the towns of Pleasant Gap and Centre Hall and is maintained by a local Boy Scout group. Along the way, you’ll pass by the site of a 1930s plane crash.
