2017 Subaru WRX STI Tackles An Olympic Bobsled Run in Switzerland

 

Imagine driving a Subaru down a bobsled run! That’s just what master driver Mark Higgins did after the Geneva Motor Show. Mark Higgins loves to take the Subaru WRX STI to unusual places, but has never tackled anything quite this challenging. Mark Higgins is known for his crazy adventures with Subarus. Just last year he broke the car lap record at the Isle of Man TT course in a new Subaru WRX STI. But nothing seems as crazy as launching a 2017 STI down a bobsled run.  After the Geneva Motor Show, a crew from Subaru drove up into the Swiss Alps to the #StMoritzCelerinaBobsledRun.  At 6,500 feet elevation, it’s the oldest bobsled run in the world. It’s also the only natural-ice track in existence that hosts international races. It’s known as the birthplace of bobsledding, which began in 1890. In its 125-year history, it has hosted the 1928 and 1948 Olympic Winter Games ,as well as twenty-four World Championships.

The St. Moritz Celerina Bobsled run is where Mark Higgins took a shiny new World Rally Blue 2017 Subaru WRX STI. It’s also the only time in the world a car has been driven on a bobsled run. Prodrive helped outfit the WRX STI with winter ice tires and added extra cladding on the front bumper for protection. It’s pretty amazing to watch what happened when Higgins started down the bobsled run. The track is just wide enough for the high-performance Subaru. It got bounced off the sides just like a bobsled team running at full speed. Inside, Higgins got bounced around like a pinball. The 2017 Subaru WRX STI got vertical on the legendary “Horse-Shoe” corner. The STI came down hard and crashed into the side, but Higgins held it together and managed to finish the 1,722 meter long run with a few dents, but still in one piece. We’re pretty sure only Subaru and Mark Higgins would attempt something like this. And, as if that weren’t enough - Higgins drove the Subaru back UP the run!
