Unfortunately, this year Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. In all likelihood, those of us in State College, PA can look forward to a few more weeks of winter weather to deal with. At Stocker Subaru, we want to make sure your Subaru sedan, SUV or crossover is up to the task. We’ve compiled a few maintenance tips to keep your #Subaru safe on the roads.
Winter Tires
Driving on Pennsylvania roads in the winter can be treacherous. That’ why winter tires are ideal, especially since today’s winter tires are no longer loud and knobby. “All season” tires can also do a good job. But there are some tire trends that aren’t great for winter driving. We’re seeing a lot of low-profile, wider fitting tires on today’s vehicles. Yes, they look great, but they don’t get great balance in snow. It’s always best to use a true winter. Newer rubber compounds and tread patterns make today’s winter tires more effective in snowy conditions. Just remember, if you choose to go with winter tires, be sure to change out the whole wheel/tire combination. It’s simply more cost effective. If you do choose to go with all-season tires, make sure you get one with a deep tread. And remember, while it’s ok to drive on tires that are a little worn in the summer, they just won’t suffice during the months of snow and ice.
Windshield Wipers
Are your windshield wipers getting a little tired? The last thing you want is for your wipers to fail during the wet winter months. At Stocker Subaru, we like Beam style windshield wiper blades the best, as they don’t have an external spring that can freeze. Whatever kind of wiper you use, it’s a great idea to keep an extra pair handy, since they usually wear out after a year of use. Here’s another great idea: turn off the wipers before you turn off the ignition. That way, if you wake up to icy or snowy weather, your wiper motor won’t burn out when you start your vehicle the next morning. It’s also smart to leave your wipers up off of the windshield. It makes it easier to clean the snow and ice off your windshield the next time you drive!
Battery
Do you have to park your vehicle outside in winter weather? Then you’ll want to make sure you have a fully juiced battery. Winter can take it’s toll on your battery. The last thing you want to hear on a winter morning is that clicking sound, indicating your battery is dead. If you don’t know how much life your battery has left in it, bring it to Stocker Subaru and our service experts will do a load-test for you. We can also replace your battery, if needed.
