The trustworthy reputation Subaru vehicles have developed over the years is not something that came easily. For the past two decades, Subaru has had their team of top notch engineers putting extreme focus on how to design a superior all-wheel-drive system. With the exception of the BRZ, the company’s AWD is standard on all models and is the pinnacle of the Subaru brand. Stocker Subaru of State College Pennsylvania is proud to be a part of the team, and wants you to know how the four different Subaru AWD systems are right for you.
Viscous Center Differential
The simplest system is the VCD. The engine sends power to the transmission, which then sends power to the center differential where it is distributed 50/50 front to rear. By using the viscous center differential, power is transferred to the wheel that has most grip. If one tire is off the ground and spinning then the brakes will actually stop that to gain traction and power the wheels with traction. This system is relevant to older Subarus also.
Active Torque Split
With this system, the engine sends power to the transmission which then distributes to a center clutch pack (not a differential) which allows a 60/40 split front to rear. Any Subaru with a CVT transmission EXCEPT the WRX has this system. It’s good because it is constantly adjusts itself to maximize torque to the wheels that need it.
Variable Torque Distribution
Only used in the CVT transmission WRX, this system uses the center differential to send power 45/55 front to rear. For sport oriented vehicles like the WRX, during acceleration the rear wheels need more power to prevent understeer and maintain stability.
Driver Controlled Center Differential
Subaru’s most proud achievement is the DCCD featured on the Subaru STI. A very sophisticated system that allows the driver to manage the distribution of power to each individual wheel can only be achieved through multiple systems working in sync. By allowing the driver to customize the race inspired power distribution system, this can help add grip in many situations that don’t happen in daily driving.
