Shocks provide resistance by forcing hydraulic fluid through valves in the piston as it moves up and down. Resistance to the vehicle’s movement occurs because this fluid - oil - can’t be compressed, so only a certain amount can be forced through the valves. 

Under normal conditions, wearing is gradual. However, a variety of factors will affect the rate of wear. Since shocks operate in a pretty hostile under-vehicle environment where ice, snow and gravel can affect their performance, the kind of driving you do has a big impact on the life of your shocks. If you’re mostly driving in the city on straight smooth roads, your shocks are likely to last much longer than if you’re driving on winding, muddy gravel roads. For example, flying gravel can easily nick or damage the piston rod allowing grit and dirt to damage the piston seal.
