Matson Museum of Anthropology - A Fascinating Place To Visit

 

Our Stocker Subaru staff is grateful that our local communities can take advantage of the many resources of Penn State University. One of our favorites is the Matson Museum of Anthropology, one of the research and outreach activities of the Department of Anthropology and the College of the Liberal Arts at The Pennsylvania State University. The Museum’s goal is to educate students and the public about the rich diversity of contemporary and ancient human cultures, the history of human evolution and the scientific explanations for human cultural and biological variability.

The Museum displays archaeological objects from around the world, including Mesopotamia, Mexico and Pennsylvania, including items used by contemporary cultures from Latin America to Afghanistan.  Particularly notable is the museum’s unique collection of one-hundred-year-old pottery made in villages from all over world. Other exhibits explore human evolution by using replicas of our ancestor’s bones in order to depict what can be learned from human skeletal remains found in archaeological sites or crime scenes.

Anthropological collections held by the Department of Anthropology were first displayed in the mid-1960s. The museum was renamed the Matson Museum of Anthropology in 1991in honor of Dr. Frederick Matson, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Anthropology.
